CD REVIEW: "The Dream"

"Husband and wife duo Ken DeAngelis and Julie Ziavras present the first public offering of their musical marriage in their self-produced album The Dream, sixteen songs composed by DeAngelis, the songwriter half of the partnership. A collection of wholly original works is an awesome undertaking, and DeAngelis demonstrates remarkable breadth and technical skill, avoiding the rote sameness that many singer-songwriters fall into when stacking one composition after another. The keys and chord progressions vary widely, with themes and pace running from the silly (like 'Civil Defense Drill,' a tongue-in-cheek fond remembrance of those childhood under-the-desk exercises those of us over 40 all recall) to the sublime. Ziavras' classically trained soprano rings particularly true on DeAngelis' aching ballads like 'Great Neck Farewell,' yet blends well with DeAngelis' folky alto in vocally complex weaves on 'Timber Wolf.' The duo is joined by a handful of musician friends; Steve Bernstein's mandolin work and Elana Myers' cello strains in particular add depth and diversity to the disc.

The pure talent of DeAngelis and Ziavras combine to generate some real gems, sparkling with energy and life. 'Splash,' 'Hanging on to Every Word,' and 'Friday Next to the Sea' are all heartfelt additions to the folk genre that are likely to find themselves worked into other performer's repertoires around the folk festival circuit.

...all the elements are here for a highly successful folk music future for Ken and Julie: love, energy, songwriting talent, two great and diverse voices, and a community of talented musical friends ready to jump in and fill out the sound. Singer-songwriters would be well advised to listen carefully to this disc and learn how to keep their sound fresh and interesting over the course of a full-length set of original pieces; dj's for folk and college stations looking for fresh material will find plenty of play-worthy pieces amidst the sixteen tracks. And the folk world should keep a weather eye open for DeAngelis' future compositions; he may well become the rudder for the next generation of contemporary American folk songwriters."

Ziavras masters the most difficult instrument (link to Times Hearald Record)
CONCERT REVIEW: Soprano Julie Ziavras wowed her Montgomery listeners with her versatile voice and the variety of her repertoire from opera to folk songs.

The human voice is the most satisfying musical instrument. It is also the most challenging and difficult to master because it is so intimate, delicate and individual.

It was the voice that dominated the program Sunday afternoon at Wesley Hall when the Grand Montgomery Chamber Music Series presented soprano Julie Ziavras as its featured artist. She was accompanied by pianist Joel Flowers, mandolin player Steve Bernstein, pianist-vocalist Paula Mlyn and guitarist-vocalist Kenneth DeAngelis. Franz Vezuli, a 15-year-old pianist, opened the program with a rousing rendition of the climactic third movement of Beethoven's "Moonlight Sonata," which he played with feeling and skill.

It was Ziavras, however, who highlighted the afternoon with her warm and compelling voice, appealing presence and wide range of repertoire.

Opera, art songs, lieder, contemporary music written especially for her, poetry and folk songs offered ample evidence of her dramatic sense of style and personable interpretations. She sang more than 20 songs in six languages and poured her full energy into each number with virtuosity and verve.

Starting with Henry Purcell's "Music for Awhile," Ziavras displayed a firm coloratura in her phrasing and treble. Flowers' arpeggios accompanied the next selection, Henri Duparc's "Chanson Triste," a sad lover's plea for his beloved's sympathy. In contrast, two poems by Walt Whitman, scored by Mlyn, set words to objective readings: a tuneful "Sing on in the Swamp" and a solemn "When Lilacs Last in the Dooryard Bloom'd," an elegy on the death of Lincoln.

Three delightful songs by Gustav Mahler celebrated young love and fables. Ziavras mimicked a donkey's "hee-haw" and a cuckoo call with comic results. Her version of Puccini's "Song of Doretta" from "La Rondine" was beautiful and moving.

After intermission, Ziavras began with "Great Neck Farewell," a nostalgic ballad by her husband, DeAngelis. She accompanied herself on guitar, and was then joined by DeAngelis on guitar and Bernstein on mandolin in a set of songs written by DeAngelis. Singing together, the couple followed the rhythmic voyage of a ship in "The Dream," the glowing tones of a child's loss in "Timber Wolf," a love story through letters in "The Journal," and a playful dialogue of lovers in "Take Me for What I Am." The songs were effectively expressive of human emotions and experiences set to fresh music.

Ziavras has enjoyed great success as a singer of Greek folk songs.

The next set of five songs explored the melancholy strains of "A Bright Day for Us, Too," the patriotic plea of "Where Is God?," the traditional hospitality of "Bread Is on the Table," and the tender affection of "Road of Dreams" and "Your Name." High notes of pathos, lilting phrases and poetic imagery, marked by mandolin trills, captured the spirit of Greece in these works by Stavros Xarchakos, Manos Hajzidakis and Mikis Theodorakis.

Mlyn on the piano accompanied Ziavras in Mlyn's music for Lorca's "He Died at Dawn," a heartfelt lament that ends its resonant cry with a quiet coda. The program concluded with two songs by Xavier Montsalvatge celebrating black Cuban culture, one a lullaby to a slow Latin beat and the other a fast-paced rumba dance. Ziavras responded to the standing ovation with another DeAngelis ballad, "Falling Star," which he joined in singing with her.

Peez Leweez: an enticing evening of music and poetry

LIVINGSTON MANOR, NY — This past Saturday evening, warmth, melodious singing, thoughtful poetry and captivating readings combined to make the recently opened coffee house a place to come in out of the cold and feel welcome. Peez Leweez, a gorgeously renovated storefront café located on Pearl Street in Livingston Manor was enlivened by an open-mike evening hosted by Times Herald Record reporter Chris Farlekas. The owners, brothers Ryan and Corey (Sims) Foster are in the process of creating an enchanting place to be. In a county that is rife with talented performers, some of whom are yet to be discovered, having a place for people to perform and for others to listen cannot help but succeed.

Entering Peez Leweez is a delightful experience. The wonderful aroma of coffee, the soft lighting and comfortable furniture and, most impressively, the array of photographs on exhibit by a student of aesthetic realism, Len Bernstein, are alluring and awakening.
Len Bernstein’s work speaks to the observer about the connectedness of the human experience. Inspired by Eli Siegel, critic and founder of the philosophy of aesthetic realism, Bernstein’s photographs capture the essence of aesthetic realism, as “The deepest desire of all of us is to like the world on an honest basis.”
Once a disquieted and bored youth like many of our present-day teens, Bernstein found meaning in taking photographs that focus on everyday people, their emotions and their experiences. According to him, “art is the opposite of contempt” as it seeks to make the world a better place by fostering empathy, understanding and humanity. The world is greatly beset by contempt, namely by those who try to make themselves better at the expense of  people and the world around them.

The positive attributes symbolized by his work were reflected in the performers and the reaction of the audience this past Saturday. In his introduction to the first performers, Julie Ziavras and Ken DeAngelis, a pair of delightful composer/folksingers, Chris Farlekas invited the audience to “Listen, hear and explore something in their hearts.” Chris first met Ken and Julie (as they are known) in Astoria Queens about 10 months ago. Their eclectic selections of original songs and adaptations of other people’s work featured gentle harmony and beautiful resonance. Their lilting songs filled the small café and captivated the audience. Each song had a story or connection to it that made their short set vivid and riveting. One of these included an original by Ken called “The Dream,” a great rendition of “The Kid” and a song that was written to commemorate Ken’s long-overdue cruise to the Bahamas. That tune, entitled “Splash” was named after a Canadian band he met while on board. They concluded with a beautiful duet called “Kate and the Ghost of Lost Love.”
Following their set, people had a chance to get up, chat and peruse Len Bernstein’s stirring photos. This served to further establish the interactive atmosphere and break down any distance between performers and audience.

Don Hendrickson, a local resident then delighted the room with a reading of some of his personal poems including “Tranquil” and Tranquil II.” He was followed by Delacey Skinner, a writer who read a short story entitled “C is For...” The stirring narrative explored a woman’s attempt to define herself in the context of a friend-turned-lover’s disease, her own betrayal of her marriage and a coming to terms with a life that had “grown out of proportion.” Skinner is president of The Southern Literature Council of Charleston, which is offering a Writers-in-Residency program for southern writers, or writers who are writing about the south. Currently, she is engaged in fundraising for this project that will offer writers space in a residency near the beach. There they would have space to write, a place to stay rent-free and meals for two to four weeks. She has just recently written and performed in an original one-act play entitled “Standard Deviations.” It concerns women talking about sex and was just performed at the Red Room above the KGB bar on Fourth Street in Manhattan.
The local mike night was a great success and is slated to become a regular event. If this evening is any indication of what is to come, Peez Leweez is likely to enrich the expanding tableau of art, activity and atmosphere in Sullivan County.

But, the strings would be vapid without the incredible voice; a siren who summoned my spirit onto the rocks of musical ecstasy.
 
I was so impressed with NEW MILLENIUM that I began listening to other recordings by Spiro Cardamis, an activity that I highly recommend. Spiro has a natural alacrity for blending sounds from disparate elements, moving them and the listener through time and space, and creating a true work of beauty.
